Introduction
The word green revolution has a great importance in supporting environmentalism for a healthy survives. Over the past few years green revolution interest is increasing in every sphere of life and library is one of the newest sectors in this field. Green Library is defined as a “Library designed to minimize negative impact on the natural environment and maximize indoor environmental quality by means of careful site selection, use of natural construction materials and environmentally-safe products, maintenance of resources like water, energy, paper and responsible waste disposal recycling”. In the 21st century a number of high-profile green libraries have been built all across the world. All over the world the list of green libraries is growing all the time. It is found that the Singapore National Library has been called the greenest building on the planet. In July 2005 it was designed by Ken Yeang. It was designed using light shelves that allow the light to filter into the library without any negative effects. During the moments that the sun is either too bright or not bright enough, sensors are programmed to dim or brighten the lights and raise the lower shades to maximize comfort and reduce costs.
Aim of study 1. To study the importance of Green Library in India. 2. To study about Green Library initiatives in India. 3. To promote Green Library Movement in India.
Review of Literature

Vasanthi. R. (2019), Green Library trends and development in India: A studyThe study reveals that green buildings has very important role for the environmental protection. The objective of the study is to highlight the efforts of the leading organizations towards an eco-friendly earth, developed standards for the upgrading of green India and green library. It is found that the duty of librarian is not only to provide information to the users but also playing a role to built modern green buildings to save our natural environment.

Bangar S. Machhindra (2018), Green Libraries in India: An Overview, the study states that librarians have to be keen on modification themselves on sustainability trends in the field of librarianship and should provide awareness and create the space in the libraries to elucidate the green practices.

Pangail, R. K. (2015). Green libraries: meaning, standards and practicesThe present study focus on the concept of ‘Go Green’ in general and ‘Green Libraries’ in particular. The study attempts to give information on different standards being followed, existing green libraries, practices and initiatives globally and locally.

Importance of Green Library In India
A Green Library is also known as a sustainable library. A library was built with environmental proceedings in mind. For people of all ages in local communities public libraries are lifelong learning centres. All over the world the libraries are not only repositories of knowledge, but are also important information resources for raising awareness about environmental concerns. Green libraries all over the world educate or provide information to public about environmental issues through their sustainable, collections, environmental friendly facilities, and public library programs.
On the other hand, green libraries maximize the effects of natural sunlight and natural air flow. Green libraries are designed while taking into account structural design, energy use, materials used and human health effects. Green Libraries investigate to reduce the use of water and energy by designing the building to maximize the use of natural and sustainable resources. Therefore to maintain the high standards of indoor air quality to help ensure the health of the people who inhabit the building.
There are lots of discussions, activities going on about ‘Go Green’ spearheaded by various councils operating from US and also in India. The United States Green Building Council (USGBC), is a non-profit organization from the United States developed LEED rating system in 2000. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is an ecology-oriented building certification program which judge building’s sustainability and certify them as Silver, Gold or platinum depending on 6 major components
1. Site Location
2. Water Conservation
3. Energy Efficiency
4. Material and Resources
5. Indoor air quality
6. Innovation and design process
Chicago Illinois Standards
Chicago is one of the first cities to consolidate eco- friendly practices into public buildings and developed its own standard. This standard is highly influenced by LEED Green Building Rating System.
Brown Green Standard
California Governor Jerry Brown discussed the emerging trend of green libraries and assigned that the libraries were on the cutting edge of Green design.New or renovated state buildings over 10,000 sq.feet will have to reach the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Silver Certification or higher, as well as incorporate clean energy generation.
Indian Green Building Council Standard
In 2001 Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) formed Indian Green Building Council with a vision to enable a sustainable build environment for all. IGBC has licensed the LEED Green Building standard from the U.S. Green Building Council and in collaboration developed Gold rating system to promote green buildings in India.
Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA)
TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute, New Delhi) is another organization that is in leading edge of the green building movement in India.
It was The Energy Resources Institute who predicted the need for development of an indigenous tool for rating of green building in India which led to the foundation of Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment. Later this rating system was adapted by the Government of India, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment has been developed as a rating system which is suitable for all kinds of buildings in different climatic zones of the country. There are also a number of educational campuses and mixed use township developments seeking GRIHA certification for the projects. GRIHA Council has launched GRIHA Large Developments for design and evaluation tool for large developments including campuses, townships, Special Economic Zones.
Some of the major Green Library initiatives in India were as follows:
1. Anna Centenary Library situated in Chennai is a library block at angle that allows maximum daylight and eco-friendly environment.
2. Karnataka University library at Dharward, is a library where no books shelves, chairs or tables but benches are installed under the trees so that readers can sit and
read the books issued from the university library.
3. Delhi University Library in Delhi, the olden days building is naturally cool and pleasant with broad opening for natural lights. Windows are large and too many
accelerating both fresh air and sunlight.
4. Calcutta University Library situated in Calcutta, the library consist of great height, vast open areas, thick walls, windows all through the eastern wall are some green
movement that are in built in this heritage structure. Library is enlightened even today by the present library leadership.
5. Madras University Library at Madras, is existing library building built in a symmetrical mixture of Indian and British architectural style. Windows are large and too
many accelerating both fresh air and sunlight in this library.
6. Mumbai University Library situated at Mumbai, in this university library and Rajabai Clock Tower above it are located in this heritage building with a height of
approx. 280 feet. The architecture itself makes it more environment friendly as it boasts than the recent low-height, less-width, non-thick walls. Calina campus library
also provide wood as stack material and providing ample space for the readers.
7. NIT, Library Silchar in Assam, the initiatives for greening the library taken by NIT, Silchar is probably the first of its kind in the entire North East Region of India. The
new building under construction is designed according to LEED certification system of U.S. It helps in making the role model for developing green libraries in Barak
valley.
8. Perma Karpo Library situated in Ladakh, in this library solar panels, surrounded by white lotus garden and innovative technologies.
Green Library Challenges in India
1. Green Libraries are concerned with green building movement, libraries have specific needs to raise some extra challenges.
2. Books must be kept safe as to preserve them from changes in moisture and temperature.
3. However many readers find sunlight to be the most enjoyable light for reading as sunlight plays a major role in green design, because it can be used to reduce the
dependency on artificial lighting.
4. For a long time, libraries needed to protect the collection from the damaging from ultra-violet rays of the sun.
5. New innovative developments in glass technology over the past ten years have given designers more resilience in their ability to place collections.
6. Another challenge library faces is the weight of books. A familiar procedure in green design is to raise the floors to increase circulation, but the weight of the stacks
can be aburden to this scenario.
7. Libraries need to be built formable, in order to make room for expansions in size and in wiring capabilities.
8. Library buildings are long term investments made to benefit the community. Architects while designing need to be looking for 50 or 100 years into the future.
9. As public libraries are publicly funded institutions, libraries are steadily aggressive with budget issues.
The currently working libraries can also implement eco-friendly measures in their day-to-day routines like:
1. Management of waste by using most modern waste segregation and recycling practices like waste can be turned into vermi-compost which can be used to increase
the green cover in the surrounding area like Orchid Ecotel in Mumbai is the best example of waste management.
2. Use of CFL lights instead of tube lights with proper maintenance can minimize expenses.
3. Rain water collection pits can be created to store water and then it can be used for gardening.
4. Use of Maximum Natural light and wind can save electricity.
5. Digitization of rare books etc. can be done to save paper.
6. Use of e-books and journals to save paper and place.
7. Eco friendly pesticides can be used at the time of pest-control. 8. Use of eco-friendly paints on the wall to reflect more light.
8. Eco friendly material can be used for stacking purpose.
9. Turning off of lights and Fans in the library when not required.
10. Using network printer instead of personal printers.
11. Installing a new server and running multiple servers on one server box.
12. Re-fill toner cartridges instead of buying new.
13. Putting computers in sleep mode when in not use.
14. In India the pace of green movement in general and in libraries is slow. Statutory Bodies like UGC, AICTE etc. can play a major role by making it mandatory for
colleges to incorporate green features in their buildings and libraries.
15. Universities too should make all the efforts to transform whenever possible libraries into green libraries.

Conclusion The library perpetually facing problems like space and budget in the same way the books has been facing problems from dust, moisture, fungus and it needs special care. The green library or sustainable is a modern library where minimize electricity consumption and maximum use of renewable sources like air, sunlight, woods. At present innovative modern world it is much more needed for a library to greening the library environment. The librarians should take some decisions to make green library and eco-friendly environment all over the world and must take part in green library movement. Many national and international bodies are helping to make green library more eco-friendly and sustainable. In India government should encourage the green library and guide to the all the libraries for making green libraries. Some of the Indian libraries have been trying to make a successful green and Librarians should take initiatives and participate in green library movement. The Library is to serve its community. The Libraries must respond to this increasing focus on Green Movement and should act as role models for sustainability by providing suitable and relevant information related to green issues and concerns. Librarians should encourage and support the movement of green libraries and help communities to understand green and sustainable concepts. More and More eco-friendly solutions should be implemented to make our mother earth a better place to live in.
