of the Indian economy. The paper discusses the impact of various measures
such as critical transport infrastructure projects, regional air connectivity,
promoting coastal shipping, ease of doing business, adoption of AI and 5G, and
promoting green growth on the logistics and supply chain management industry in
India. Overall, the Union Budget 2023 is expected to have a positive long-term
impact on the logistics and supply chain management industry in India. Critical Transport Infrastructure
Projects The paper highlights the significance of critical
transport infrastructure projects, including the Bharatmala Pariyojana,
Sagarmala Project, and Dedicated Freight Corridors. These projects aim to lower
transportation costs and improve connectivity, which would benefit the
logistics and supply chain management industry. The timely completion of these
projects is essential for the sector's growth, as emphasized in the study. Moreover, the government has identified 100
critical transport infrastructure projects for the ports, coal, steel,
fertilizer, and food grains sectors. These projects will provide last and
first-mile connectivity and require a total investment of Rs 75,000 crore, with
Rs 15,000 crore to be invested by private sources. The combined investment by
the public and private sectors will create a robust future for the logistics
industry. Additionally, the announcement of Rs 10 lakh crore
capital investment outlay in infrastructure to accelerate economic growth will
further enhance the growth potential of the sector. Regional Air Connectivity The Union Budget 2023 has proposed to improve
regional air connectivity by adding 100 new airports in the next five years.
This initiative is expected to benefit the air cargo industry, which is a
critical component of the logistics and supply chain management sector. A study suggests that the increased regional
connectivity would enhance the speed and efficiency of the supply chain,
ultimately resulting in reduced logistics costs. As part of this plan, 50
airports, heliports, water aerodromes, and advanced landing grounds will be
revived to improve regional air connectivity. This move is expected to cover a
vast landscape in a shorter time, creating synchronized trading internally, and
resulting in a more competitive export system for India globally. The Promotion of Coastal Shipping It is being considered as a cost-effective transportation
system. The paper highlights proposed measures to promote coastal shipping,
including providing incentives for coastal shipping and developing coastal
economic zones. The study suggests that promoting coastal shipping
would not only reduce transportation costs but also decrease dependence on road
and rail transport and reduce carbon emissions. Additionally, the development
of coastal economic zones is expected to create employment opportunities in the
logistics and supply chain management industry. The government has announced Viability Gap Funding
(VGF) to promote coastal shipping in a public-private partnership (PPP) model
for both passengers and freight. This move is expected to attract more MSMEs,
creating more job opportunities. The government has also focused on developing
green infrastructure development by introducing policies and procedures to
digitize the supply chain and connect it to the last mile, making India a
reliable supply chain hub for world markets. Ease of doing business The Union Budget 2023 proposed measures to simplify
compliance requirements, reduce the time taken for clearances, and introduce a
single-window clearance mechanism. The paper suggests that these measures would
improve the ease of doing business, reduce transaction costs, and boost the
growth of the logistics and supply chain management industry. The government
has introduced several initiatives to ease the process of doing business in
India. The government's announcements on less stringent
contract execution and credit guarantee schemes for MSMEs will help businesses
affected by the pandemic. The DigiLocker service will facilitate secure online
storage and sharing of documents, further improving efficiency in the business
ecosystem. Adoption of AI and 5G The study analyzes the proposed measures to promote
the adoption of AI and 5G in the logistics and supply chain management
industry. The paper suggests that the adoption of these technologies would
improve the efficiency and speed of the supply chain, reduce transportation
costs, and enhance the tracking and tracing of goods. The government has announced its focus on setting
up more adoption of AI and 5G, which will require a more skilled talent pool.
This will help to improve the efficiency of the logistics sector, as well as
help businesses keep up with the latest technology. Promoting Green Growth The Union Budget 2023 proposed measures to promote
green growth, such as reducing the carbon footprint of the logistics and supply
chain management industry. The study suggests that these measures would
improve the sustainability of the industry, reduce costs, and enhance the
reputation of Indian companies in the global market. Green Infrastructure Development The Union Budget 2023 has placed a significant
emphasis on sustainable development and green infrastructure development. The government
has allocated funds to promote green infrastructure projects such as electric
vehicles, renewable energy, and waste management systems. The focus on
digitizing the supply chain and connecting it to the last mile will help to
reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable transportation practices. National Logistics Policy (NLP) The National
Logistics Policy (NLP) was introduced in 2019 with the aim of reducing
logistics costs and enhancing India's logistics performance. The policy
includes measures such as the development of multimodal transport
infrastructure, the adoption of technology, and the streamlining of
regulations. The Union Budget 2023 builds on the NLP and provides further
funding and support for the logistics sector. Attracting Foreign Investment The Union Budget 2023 aims to make India a more
attractive destination for foreign investment in the logistics sector. The
government has proposed reducing customs duties for certain sectors and
introducing a revamped credit guarantee scheme to provide finance requirements
for MSMEs. The focus on enhancing India's 5G ecosystem and promoting online
learning will also help to create a skilled talent pool and attract foreign
investment in the logistics sector. Promoting Online Learning The government has announced initiatives in the
Union Budget 2023 to promote the growth of the logistics industry in India. One
of these is the Karmayaogi platform, which provides online training and
development opportunities for government officials in the logistics sector.
This will help them keep up with the latest advancements in technology. Job Creation and Attracting
Talent These measures will also reduce costs and improve
efficiency, making it easier for businesses to operate and driving economic
growth. Overall, the Union Budget 2023 is a positive development for the logistics and supply chain management industry in India. The government's support for the logistics sector creates a more favourable environment for businesses to operate in, supporting the growth and development of the Indian economy. The focus on infrastructure development, ease of doing business, adoption of AI and 5G, and promoting online learning will modernize the logistics sector and make India more attractive for international trade. Additionally, the emphasis on sustainability and green infrastructure development signals a shift towards more responsible and sustainable practices in the industry. These measures are expected to revitalize the logistics industry in India and pave the way for growth and progress. |
