Views of Swami Vivekananda’s There
is a more to learn from Vivekananda’s thoughts on education. Swami puts lot of
focus on physical education, more education, religious education, media of
language in Education, Woman Education, an education for weaker section of
society. 1.
Physical Education–
Without the practical aspect of physical education, the self realization , self
adoptation or human character building is not possible. One must know it is not
possible to keep a strong mind without a strong body. In particular we can and
the stress the need for physical education and curriculum. Swami jia said you
will be nearer to heaven through football than through the study of Kita. You
will understand Gita better by your biceps. Your muscles are little stronger.
You will understand the Upanishad better and the glory of the. At month when
your body stands, forms on your feet. Can you feel yourself as a manhood. 2.
Medium of Education– Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagor and
Vivekananda also focused on education through the medium of mother tongue.
Swami said besides mother tongue there should be a common language which is
necessary to keep the country.
Appreciated the greatness of Sanskrit. Swami ji said that it is the
source of all Indians languages and a repository of all inherited aspect.
Therefore, without sense great, it will be impossible to understand Indian
culture. It is a like a store House of ancient heritage to develop a society.
It is necessary that man and woman know his language Besides the knowledge of
there Own mother language. 3.
Moral and Religious Education– Swami
ji said religion is the core of education. Religion is like the core of education. Religion is like the rice
and everything else is like the curries. Talking only curries causes
indigestion and so is the case with talking rice alone. Therefore religious
education is a vital part of a sound curriculum. Vivekananda’ considered Gita
Upanishads and the Vedas as the more necessary curriculum for religious
education. It helps not only in individual’s development but also in the
transformation of overall dovelopment of a man. 4. Education Of Masses– The individual
development is not a holistic development of our nation and society so it is important to give
education to the society or general peoples. The education is not only confined
to the well to do persons only but also to the poor people. Swami ji focused on
the improvement of the condition of the masses and for this he advocated mass
education. 5.
Man Making Education-
The academic philosophy of swami Vivekananda is a harmonious analysis between
the ancient Indian ideals and modern western beliefs. Swami not only stressed
upon the physical, cognitive, moral, values and vocational development of
the student but also, he advocated women
education as well as education of the masses. The necessary characteristics of
educational philosophy of swami Vivekananda are idealism naturalism and
pragmatism. In a naturalistic view points he focused that original education is
possible only through nature and natural features . In the form of idealist
view point he insists that the aim of education is to develop the child with
moral values and spiritual qualities. 6.
Self Education–
This is the practical aspect .Self education is the self-knowledge. That is
knowledge of our self is the best council in the struggle of our life. If we
take one example the child hood stage the child will face lot of problems or
commit mistakes in the process of character information. The child will learn
much by his own mistakes. Errors are the stepping stones to our progress in
character. This progress will need courage and will strong. The strong will is
the sign of great character of the man. 7.
Women Education- Vivekananda considered women to be the
incarnation of power. He rightly pointed out that unless Indian women secure a
respectable place in this country the nation can never move forward. The
necessary features of his scheme of women education are make women strong fear
less and conscious of their chastity and dignity. He insists that male and
female are squally competent not only in the academic matters but also in other
spheres of life. 8.
Education For Weaker Section of Society-
Vivekananda pleaded for the universal education so that the backward
people may fall in line with each-others.
To uplift the poor classes he chooses education as a most powerful instrument for their life
process. Thus education should spread to every household in the country to
factories playing grounds and agricultural field. If the children do not come
to the school the teacher should reach them. Two or three educated men should
reach them. Two or three educated men should team up collect all the
paraphernalia of education and should go to the village to impart education to
the student. From
the analysis of Swamiji’s scheme of education, it is clear that the upliftment
of masses is possible only through education. His views on education brings to
light a constructive practical and comprehensive approach to materialize the
moral and spiritual welfare and uplift men of humanity irrespective of caste
creed nationality of time. By the way of his scheme of education we can get to
build the strong nation with peace and harmony and without caste and creed. Definition According
to Swami ji teach yourselves, teach everyone his original nature, call upon the
sleeping soul and see how it awakes. Power will come, glory will come, goodness
will come, purity will come and everything that is excellent will come when
this sleeping soul is roused to self-conscious activity. Banerjee
& Meeta 2015 ‘’Education
it the manifestation of divine perfection already reached In man’’. Swami
Vivekananda’s
Aims
and Objectives of Education The
ultimate aim of all education and all training according to swami Vivekananda
is mam making and also, he recommends the following major aims of education. 1.
Creation of Self –
Confidence And Self – Realization – Man has an immortal soul which is the treasure
house of infinite power. Man should therefore have full confidence in himself
and strive to reach the highest goal of his life, self-confidence loads to
self-realization. IN Swamiji’s own words ‘’faith in us and faith in God this is
the secret of greatness. ‘’ 2.
Fornation of Character– Character is the aggregate of a man’s Tendencies the sum
total of the bent off his mind. We are what our thoughts have made us. A good
thinker is always a well-wisher. A good thinking comes from a good moral equipped
mind .It simply means a good education seeds high moral values and these values
are quite strong to eliminate the evil tendencies of our mind. 3.
Development Of Personality– Personality is the influence the impression one creates
on the others. It is the personality of a man that counts. “According to
Vivekananda personality is 2 third and his intellect words are only one. 3rd in
making the real man.” The ideal of all education an all trainings should be dis
man making. Service
of Mind –
another important aim of Education is serving the God in man. It is the God in
the sick, the poor, the miserable, the egg ignorant and down - trodden and what
we should worship. And Swamiji own Words “If you want to find God Serve man.”
he was pained to see the wretched poverty of his countryman. He therefore
wanted that education must enable everyone to stand on his own feet and satisfy
his own primary needs. 4.
Promotion of Universal Brotherhood- swami Vivekananda’s love for mankind knew no
geographical boundaries. He always played for the harmony and good relationship
of all nations. He said “through education we should gradually reach the idea
of Universal Brotherhood by flinging down the walls of separation, and
inequality. In every man in every animal, however weak or miserable, Great or
small, Resize the same omnipresent an Omni sent soul. The difference is not in
the soul, but in manifestation. He instead the education, must call forth his
power in every person and broadened it to such an extent that is, may cover the
whole world. 5.
The Aim of Keeping in View the Practical Aspects Of Life– To Swami Vivekananda,
the practical aspects of life must not be ignored in any scheme of Education.
Only then, it will be possible to make an individual self- dependent and the
country prosperous. Swamiji said “It will not do Marely to listen to great
principles. you must apply them in the practical field. Turn into constant
practice. “So, he has emphasized the importance of education in agriculture and
other practical arts. 6.
Aim Of Physical And Mental Development- The second aim of Education is that the
child should able to promote national growth and advancement as a fearless a
physically well-developed citizen of tomorrow. Stressing the mental development
of the child, Swamiji wished education to enable the child to stand on his own
legs economically rather than becoming of parasites of on other. 7.
Aim of Moral and Spiritual Development- According to Swami Vivekananda or nation’s
greatness is not only measured by its Parliamentary institution and activities,
but also by the greatness of its citizens. But the greatness of citizens is
possible only through their moral and spiritual development, which education
should Foster. 8.
The Aim of Searching Unity in Diversity– The true aim of Education is to develop
insight into the individual so that they are able to search out and realize
unity in diversity. Swami Vivekananda has further asserted that physical and
spiritual Worlds are one. Their distinctiveness is an illusion. (Maya).
Education should develop this sense, which finds unity in diversity. 9.
Aim of Religious Development– Two Swamiji, each individual should be able
to search out and develop the religious seed embedded in him, and thus find the
absolute truth or reality. Hence, he advocated the training of feelings and
Emotions so that the whole life in purified and sublimated than only the
capacity of obedience, social service and submission to the teaching and
Preaching’s of great saint. An saviors will develop in the individual.
education should foster this development. Educational
Views of Swami Vivekananda’s on Curriculum According
to Swami Vivekananda, the prime aim of Education is spiritual growth and
development. but this does not mean that he did not advocate material
prosperity and physical well-being. He feelingly advocated third inclusion of
all those subjects and activities, In the curriculum which foster material
welfare with spiritual advancement. For spiritual perfections, swami prescribed
religious, philosophy, Upanishads, company of Saint and Their preaching’s and
for material advancement and prosperity He recommended language, geography,
science. Political science, economics, psychology, arts, agriculture,
industrial and technical subjects together with game, sports and other physical
exercise. Method’s
of Education Swami
Vivekananda’s prescribed the same ancient spiritual methods of teaching wherein
the Guru and his disciples lived in close Association as in a family. The
essential characteristics of those religious and spiritual methods, whereas
under- 1.
To control fleeting cognativel faculties, by the practice of exercise. 2.
To develop the mind by concentration and meditation. 3.
To gain the theoretical knowledge through lectures, demonstration discussion,
self-experience a creative activity. 4.
To imitate the qualities and characters of Teachers Intelligence and upper
understanding and knowing. 5.
To lead the student on the right path by means of individuals guidance by the
teacher educator. Swami
Ji advocates that since the human mind is perfect, there is no necessity for it
to receive knowledge from outside. Hence, learning is nothing but a process of
discovery of knowledge within the mind. However, he has suggested following
methods of teaching to be followed in a teaching learning situation. 1.
Concentration Method–
Swamiji considered concentration as the only method of attaining cognitive
aspect. The key to the treasure House of knowledge. Concentration method helps
the child to withdraw his different senses from Temptation of life and
concentrate on the subject matter of instructions. He believes that
Brahmacharya is necessary for developing the power of concentration. He said
“brahma Chari should be the burning fire within the veins.” 2.
Methods of Realization– Vivekananda’s considered realization as the chief aim of
life. He advocated yoga is the most ideal method of realization. Yoga’s are
four in number, Karma
Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Raja Yoga and jnana Yoga The
scope of all these yoga is 1 and the same removal of ignorance an enabling the
soul to restore its original nature. 3.
Discussion And Contemplation Method– Borrowing the idea from ancient Indian
Gurukul system of Education with Vivekananda’s and also advocated at discussion
an contemplation to be followed in education. 4.
Limitation Method–
Children like to imitate the activities of others. Vivekananda therefore
advocated utilizing such qualities of children for educational purposes. A
teacher should present higher ideals and nobler patterns of behavior. Before
the children to help them to imitate such activities for the formation of their
Character and personality. 5.
Individual Guidance and Counselling– Vivekananda advocated the method of
individual guidance and counseling in the teaching learning process to develop
divine wisdom. 6. Lecture Method – Spiritual ideas are abstract ideas. It is becoming difficult on the part of a child to understand spiritual doctrines. Therefore, Vivekananda advocated for the introduction of lecture method to explain the spiritual ideas in a simple way to the students. Activity
Method–
Swami Ji accepted learning through activities as an ideal method and effective
method of teaching. It can provide direct experience to the children. He
advocated those activities like singing, storytelling, drama, and dance should
be performed by the students. He also advocated for the Introduction Of
activities like excursions, camps etc., to help the students to understand the
value of social service. Relevance
of Swami Vivekananda’s Ideas in Modern Education Vivekananda
felt that modern education all over the world has so far concentrated on the
learning to do aspect and not on the learning to be faculties of Education. He
says that education must focus on the requirement of the human mind. His
philosophy of Education is based on universal principle of morality and ethics.
He wanted to teach the common masses of India, the ideals of synthesis,
tolerance, and Universal Harmony. His philosophy gives equal importance to the
claims of spirit and matter. To him, diversity is as real as unity. Matter is
only ‘veiled spirit’. Thus, he creates a metaphysical synthesis, reconciling
the claims of spirit and matter and makes it one of these chief bases of its
philosophy of Education. Value
Education– Education is conceived in the broad sense
everything in the society plays an educational role. The formal education
Planning is but part of the culture and values in the system are inevitably
determined by the culture. Education is seen as an instrument for harnessing human
drives and as consequences it becomes to some extent am method of behavior
modification. Environmental
Education-
Environmental education is viewed as an integral part of the education process.
It is taken to be centered on practical problems and can be an
interdisciplinary character. It should aim at building up sense of values,
contributes to public well-being a concern in itself with survival of the human
species. It’s forced, therefore should, asides mainly the initiative of the
learners and their involvement in action, and it should be guided by immediate
future subject of concern. Environmental education enables them to manage the
environment in which they live through a judicious use of resources.
Citizenship
Education–
The concept of citizenship education should target to mold the future citizens
in to the frame of a Civic Society where citizens are aware of their rights,
respects Democratic ideals, and work for a welfare Society with shared
responsibility. Education for Democratic citizenship is a set of practices and
activities aimed at making young people and adults better equipped to
participate actively in Democratic life by assuming and exercising their rights
and responsibilities in society .Education should not only implant good morals in
us towards our family and society, it should also develop a sense of
nationalism understanding in us. Starting from school level, Moral Education
should be included in course syllabus and also regular workshops should be
conducted so that every student can get a feeling of good human being. |
