Abstract |
In today’s time people can’t imagine life without accessing internet. People depend on their smartphones for work, school, personal and social lives. The internet has become a significant part of people’s daily lives. So too has social media. Social Media is an electronic form of communication and information-sharing where users can create and distribute unique content or view the content of others. Like most things, using social media has its positives (the good), its cautionary tales (the bad), and dangers (the ugly) that lurk and impact the lives of many.

Main Text |
Social media originated as a way to interact with friends and family but soon expanded to serve many purposes. Social media participation exploded in the years that followed with the entry of Facebook and Twitter. Businesses gravitated toward these platforms in order to reach an audience instantly on a global scale. Types of Social Media Social media platforms can be categorized according to the interests of their users and their purposes. There are platforms that appeal to video game players, social gamers, video sharers, professional business networks, virtual worlds, review platforms, and beyond. People use various social media applications to network career opportunities, find others across the globe with like-minded interests, and share their political views. Entertainers and politicians use social media to engage with constituents and voters. For businesses, social media has become a key tool. Companies use the platforms to find and engage with customers, drive sales through advertising and promotion, gauge consumer trends, and offer customer service or support. Further, social media can help build customer relationships through loyalty programs linked to social media. Benefits of Social Media Being able to keep up with family Socialize with friends Fostering the environment of communication and connectivity Connects people all over the world in mere seconds Fast access to real time events Banking and bill pay at fingertips Online learning, job skills, content discovery Promotion of public participation and civic engagement Source of entertainment Great marketing tools Opportunities for remote employment, etc. Disadvantage of Social Media Can spark information overload and feelings of overwhelm Can make children, teens, and young adults vulnerable to cyberbullying and peer pressure Can increase feelings of social isolation, Fear of missing out (FOMO), procrastination, and distraction May lead to sleep disruption and a sedentary lifestyle May become addictive, resulting in excessive usage Can evoke feelings of inadequacy, low self-esteem, and issues with one’s self-image etc. The negative effects of social media are both physical and mental. They can change user’s perception of the world and about themselves. Spending too long on social networking sites could adversely affect user mood. In fact, chronic social users are more likely to report poor mental health, including symptoms of anxiety and depression. It doesn't take much thinking to figure out why. Social media lets user see the carefully selected best parts of everyone else's lives, which they then compare to the negatives in their own life. Comparing themselves to other people is a sure path to anxiety and unhappiness, and social media has made this much easier to do. On top of increasing the cases of anxiety and depression, another bad thing about social media is that spending too much time on it can lead to poor sleep. Numerous studies have shown that increased use of social media has a negative effect on sleep quality. Before social media, bullying was something that was only possible to do face-to-face. However, now people can bully others online—anonymously or not. While social media makes it easier to meet new people and make friends, it also enables cruel people to tear into others with little effort. Perpetrators of bullying can use the anonymity that (some) social networks provide to gain people's trust and then terrorize them in front of their peers. For instance, they might create a fake profile and act friendly to a classmate, then later betray and embarrass them online. These online attacks often leave deep mental scars and even drive people to hurt them or take their own lives, in some cases. And as it turns out, cyberbullying doesn't just affect kids. Adults can become victims of online abuse, too. Furthermore, social media forms unrealistic expectations of life and friendships in user’s minds. One of the effects of social media is encouraging people to form and cherish "social media friendships" over actual friendships. The term 'friend' as used on social media is a weak shadow of traditional friendship. Real friends actually know each other, frequently interact face to face, and have a personal bond. |

Conclusion |
If the internet is an unmissable part of contemporary life, social media is integral for communication – an unavoidable element, especially for those who lead hectic lifestyles and depend on it for even the smallest updates. The wise use of social media depends upon its users. |
