India is celebrating its 75 years of the enactment of the Constitution of India on 26th
November 2024. To commemorate this event, the Political Science Department of
Christ Church College hosted a lecture and a poster exhibition today, on 9th
November 2024, on the theme "A Journey of 75 Years of the Constitution of India"
as a prelude to mark the occasion.
The occasion was graced by the Chief Guest, Prof. Joseph Daniel, Principal and
Secretary of Christ Church College; keynote Speaker Mr. Prakalpa Sharma, legal
expert and Deputy Registrar IIT Kanpur; and Prof. Ashutosh Saxena, Chairperson
and former head of the Department of Political Science, Prof. Sweta Chand, Vice
Principal and all the distinguished faculty of the college.
The event started with the lighting of the lamp and the invocation of the goddess of
wisdom, Maa Saraswati. The Convener, Prof. Vibha Dikshit, welcomed the
distinguished guests, colleagues and students and introduced the theme of the event.
She emphasized the need to protect and promote the principles embedded within
the Constitution.
The Keynote speaker and Constitutional Law Expert, Mr Prakalp Sharma, delivered
a compelling address on the importance of constitutional literacy, exploring how
each citizen's understanding of their rights is crucial to democracy's success. "The
Constitution is not just a document from our past; it's a blueprint for our future." His
lecture highlighted how the Indian Constitution has firmly withstood different
challenges and upheld constitutional values, ideals, and visions in governance,
fostering inclusive and vibrant democracy.
In his address, the Chief Guest, Prof. Joseph Daniel, emphasized the need for
students to dedicate themselves to nation-building by adhering to the ideals and
objectives enshrined in the Indian Constitution. The chairperson of the session, Prof.
Ashutosh Saxena, summarized the panellists' perspectives and added his valuable
insights on the aspects of constitutionalism in India. He illuminated constitutional
interpretation, the significance of recent legal precedents, and how young people
can engage in civic life. All the panellists stressed that active, knowledgeable
participation is essential for a healthy democracy. Audience members participated
in a lively interactive session with questions on how the Constitution impacts digital
privacy, social justice, and environmental policy. Students and educators alike were
encouraged to think critically about their roles as protectors of constitutional values.
The Political Science UG Sem I students had put up a "Poster Exhibition" on the
theme and received great applause from all the attendees. The best posters were
selected for the awards. The event concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by
Dr Archana Pandey. The event was attended by students and faculty in great
numbers. The event was a grand success due to the effective coordination by Dr.
Archana Verma and her organizing team, which consisted of Parma Mishra, Puja
